From Populism to Consciousness:Is Humanity Approaching the Limits of Democracy?

Human history has long grappled with the question of leadership. Yet over the past fifteen years, the global political landscape has undergone a remarkable transformation: across continents, cultures, and political systems, the number of leaders rising to prominence through populist rhetoric has significantly increased. These leaders often position themselves in opposition to the existing political order, employing a language that draws a sharp line between “the people” and “the elites.” This development should not merely be understood as the rise of a particular political ideology, but rather as a sign of a deeper societal transformation.
The global financial crisis of 2008 marked a crucial turning point that exposed the fragility of the modern political and economic order. In many countries, millions of people lost their jobs, economic insecurity intensified, and the sense of stability long sustained by the middle class began to erode. The perception gradually strengthened that the economic system produced by globalization was benefiting only certain segments of society while leaving others behind. In such an atmosphere, trust in political institutions and traditional parties weakened dramatically. The rise of populist leaders largely emerged within this climate of growing distrust.
Alongside economic factors, the cultural transformations generated by globalization have further deepened this process. Increasing migration flows, the erosion of geographical boundaries through communication technologies, and the rapid intensification of cultural interaction have triggered intense debates over identity in many societies. Under these conditions, some political leaders began to use concepts such as national identity, security, and sovereignty as powerful political tools. As a result, politics has increasingly shifted toward a more emotional and identity-driven sphere.
The role of digital communication technologies in this transformation cannot be overlooked. With the emergence of social media platforms, political communication has undergone a fundamental change. The filtering role traditionally played by institutions such as newspapers, universities, and political parties has weakened, while leaders have gained the ability to communicate directly with millions of people. In this new communication environment, short, striking, and emotionally charged messages spread far more rapidly than complex political discussions. Populist rhetoric has flourished precisely within this environment.
Yet these developments cannot be explained solely through the rise of certain leaders. A deeper question emerges: are modern democratic systems sufficiently adaptable to the rapidly changing realities of the global world? Democracy largely developed within the social conditions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Today, however, humanity lives in a far more complex world shaped by technological acceleration, global interdependence, and ecological crises. Under these new conditions, the limitations of traditional political institutions are becoming increasingly visible.
At this point, some thinkers raise a more radical question: is humanity approaching the end of the democratic era, or are we witnessing the early emergence of a new model of governance? There is no definitive answer to this question yet. Nevertheless, in recent years various alternative governance approaches have begun to be discussed across different fields. Concepts such as digital democracy, algorithmic governance, and participatory network-based systems reflect this search. Yet most of these models continue to approach power and decision-making within the same conceptual framework.
The philosophical perspective of Eteryanism offers a different lens at this point. According to Eteryanism, governance is not merely a matter of institutional design; it is also a reflection of the level of collective consciousness within a society. The form of governance that emerges in a society is directly connected to the developmental stage of its collective awareness. If humanity is indeed approaching a new historical threshold, this transformation will not occur solely through the reform of political institutions, but through the expansion of human consciousness toward broader fields of responsibility and awareness.
From this perspective, leadership should not be defined primarily through power or authority, but through ethical maturity, clarity of consciousness, and the capacity to perceive the interconnectedness of existence. Such an approach understands human beings not merely as economic or political actors, but as multidimensional conscious entities. Consequently, an Eteryanist understanding of governance envisions a field of responsibility that encompasses not only human societies but also nature, other living beings, and the ecological integrity of the planet.
The tensions and polarizations observable in contemporary world politics may therefore signal more than a simple political crisis. They may indicate that humanity is approaching a new threshold of thought. Throughout history, major transformations have often emerged from periods of profound crisis. For this reason, the political turbulence of our time might be interpreted not only as a decline but also as the birth pains of a new understanding of governance.
Perhaps the fundamental question today is no longer which leader will govern the world.
The deeper question is whether humanity will be capable of creating forms of governance that correspond to the evolving horizons of its own consciousness.
